چکیده
From their inception in the early 20th century, causal systems models (more commonly known as structural-equations models) were accompanied by graphi-cal representations or path diagrams that provided compact summaries of qualitative assumptions made by the models. Fig. 1 provides a graph that would correspond to any system of 5 equations encoding these assumptions:

Stock Flow Diagram Making with Incomplete Information about Time Properties of Variables
Models for numerical simulations should be described in a coherent style. They are expected to have consistencies at the causal dependency level. However, System Dynamics causal loop diagrams can have inconsistencies. This diagram style’s arrows, concerning flow and stock relationships, can have the opposite direction of stock flow diagrams which can numerically simulate models. These inconsist...
متن کاملEffects of causal loop diagrams on escalating commitment
Previous research suggests that decision makers have the tendency to keep on investing in losing courses of action. The present study focuses on de-escalation and proposes causal loop diagrams as a technique to decrease escalating commitment in a failing action. The effectiveness of causal loop diagrams is also contrasted with the effect of receiving a list of important factors. Causal loop dia...
متن کاملConstructing Causal Diagrams to Learn Deliberation
Policy problems like “What should we do about global warming?” are ill-defined in large part because we do not agree on a system to represent them the way we agree Algebra problems should be represented by equations. As a first step toward building a policy deliberation tutor, we investigated: (a) whether causal diagrams help students learn to evaluate policy options, (b) whether constructing d...
متن کاملCausal Reasoning with Ancestral Graphs
Causal reasoning is primarily concerned with what would happen to a system under external interventions. In particular, we are often interested in predicting the probability distribution of some random variables that would result if some other variables were forced to take certain values. One prominent approach to tackling this problem is based on causal Bayesian networks, using directed acycli...
متن کاملARCHIVES Problems with causal-loop diagrams
Founded in the mid1950s, the field of system dynamics has intellectual roots reaching much further into the past. The Archives section of the Review seeks to publish material from that past which can contribute to current theory and practice. The section welcomes previously unpublished but deserving system dynamics work, classics from past system dynamics literature that should receive renewed ...
متن کاملQuantifying a Systems Map: Network Analysis of a Childhood Obesity Causal Loop Diagram
Causal loop diagrams developed by groups capture a shared understanding of complex problems and provide a visual tool to guide interventions. This paper explores the application of network analytic methods as a new way to gain quantitative insight into the structure of an obesity causal loop diagram to inform intervention design. Identification of the structural features of causal loop diagrams...
